Battlefield 4 getting brand new engine: Frostbite 3

30
New engine features much better destruction, new lighting effects, new animations, weather effects, and more.

Battlefield 4 is currently being revealed behind closed doors in Stockholm to the Swedish press and gamers. And the first details about the game have emerged.

Many suspected that Battlefield 4 would be powered by an updated Frostbite 2 engine — the same that powers BF3. Now it appears that Battlefield 4 is getting a brand new engine, Frostbite 3, filled with tons of new features built from the ground up.

Among the new additions is a much improved destruction feature where buildings can be completely destroyed (like in Bad Company 2, only at a much greater level and detail), a better lighting system, new animations, a brand new weather system, and more.

We’ll be hearing a lot more about Frostbite 3 and the technology of Battlefield 4 over the next few days. Stay tuned!

You guys did not know that DICE developed Frostbite 2 from scractch for next gen consoles? That was what DICE claimed anyway. Now, you are saying they trash all this and created a new one?
This is only an iteration in the engine, using the same core, and not a new engine like cry engine 1,2,3 etc or id tech 1,2,3. Get your stories straight.

It clearly says, “new features built from the ground up” not, “the engine is completely built from the ground up.” Get your stories straight.

Actually Nextgen consoles will be 1080p and will be 60fps.

Nope, 720p res with 60fps and will support 64 player maps.. Not 1080p res..

      March 26th, 2013 at 2:37 pm

That 720p thing was actually proven to be false. The person that “leaked” it admitted he was lying and had no info whatsoever. The 1080p/60fps comes from the mouths of EA themselves in a meeting where they said that 1080p/60fps is their target performance level for next gen games. Whether that will be the case or not is still to be seen.

It is HIGHLY unlikely that Battlefield 4 will be running at lower than 1080p on the nextgen consoles. 1080p/30fps is a safe bet. There hasn’t been a single demonstration/game shown yet that is running at 720p for next-gen consoles.

EA hasn’t even revealed the game yet you say that they released details about the game supporting 1080P/60 FPS. Where did the mention that *Officially*?

I don’t see it anywhere and you’re an obvious console fag lying the fuck out of your ass. There was no meeting by EA anywhere, neither on PAX 2013 and unless you are a press guy you won’t even know what’s been shown or being reported by DICE/EA at their GDC 2013 Unveil.

All i know is that earlier leak was spot in with what this site has mentioned know. That leak mentioned gameplay in China (Confirmed), Fall 2013 or November release date (Confirmed), Female and other three playable factions (Confirmed), New Destruction Engine based around Frostbite (Confirmed). Although they said Frostbite 2.5 but the features mentioned have been so far confirmed by many other sites. And last of all, i think its plausible enough that the 720P/60 FPS for consoles would be confirmed too in a few hours at the unveil.

Little kids these days, thinking anything if even one name is mentioned wrong is false.

Console won’t handle this game in 1080p@60fps, i’m betting it.

            March 26th, 2013 at 7:19 pm

PS4 specs already couldn’t handle BF3 at 1080/60Hz. The idea that this will be possible with a newer engine is a joke unless it’s optimized for consoles even more than FB2 without any graphical enhancements.

            @no
really the ps4 is similar to a 660 which can play ultra with 4x msaa at 53 fps
turn off 4x msaa because it is not worth it for consoles and you get 60 easy

            @NO
You cant speculate how BF3 does on PS4 -reason the game isn’t forwards compatible with the new O.S. also considering that the new system (to expand on what Herp said) is similar in Flops to a gtx 660 and the BF3 runs at 1080p on a gtx 260 @ 45+-10 fps(which is older that the current 360 or PS3) your statement not only makes no sense, its an embarrassment. I take your embarrassment and raise you logic.

Thought the developers said in the recent video looking back on BF3 that the one thing they learned from working on BF3 is not to build a new engine and a new game at once.

Looking forward to BF4! Maybe 2-seater jets and commander mode. They could make it so good if they wanted to.

    March 26th, 2013 at 2:46 pm

Really? They said BF3 was only running at around 20% power. Hopefully Frostbite 3 IS better and does justice to BFBC2 destruction. The most important feature to me is destruction. That defines the game. The destruction and maps need to be like Arica Harbor. EVERY building in the second base could be brought down completely! It was awesome to look back on the map near the end of a massive round and see just how awesome that battle has been. It brought more of a wow factor than the tower of Caspian Border coming down. I don’t want to see what Frostbite 3 can do, I want to see what I can do. Oh, and bring back the concrete that could have holes shot out too. Instant cover and a good firing position.

As for the weather features. I’ll have to see what it’s all about. It would be awesome to have sunny, dry conditions and then have a dark, thunderstorm come rolling in. Anyone else want a white out?

    March 26th, 2013 at 3:37 pm

1080p @ 60fps on “next-gen” consoles that’s already 2 generations behind current PC hardware? I doubt it. Plus its confirmed that BF4 will also be on PS3 and X360 so there goes the game getting screwed by limited console hardware once again. You can bet PS3 and X360 will be the main dev platform since EA knows that most gamers will be buying the game on current gen because most gamers won’t have made the switch to PS4 and next xbox. Here’s to another shitty console port garbage that won’t have mod support cuz EA are greedy.

Bring back dolphin diving. As a man who has made a career out of Dolphin Diving, BF3 has really made times tough and I would be gracious if they can bring back support of the DD.

wow….. new frostbite engine, why they didn’t give frostbite 2 another chance by using 80% of its power as it was said before ? not hating the new engine but guess i have to see what it will show us tommorow .

      March 26th, 2013 at 6:15 pm

im with you on the new engine, they should’ve gave frostbite 2.0 a chance for the next-gen consoles. But these all are just speculations…

        March 27th, 2013 at 5:57 am

but let’s hope they don’t use 30%-40% of it’s power like they did to BF3 with frostbite 2 because this time we 80%-90% TAKE IT TO THE MAX DICE !!

Really now? Like skyrim got creation engine when it was in reallity a modified gamebryo? Or how frostbite 2 was “All new” and not a updated frostbite engine.

    March 27th, 2013 at 7:50 pm

Wow, stop bitching like women. Of course it will have 1080p, consoles now have never utilized all their potential, so next gen models will handle that no problem… Even though that had nothing to do with how realistic the graphics will be presented… Hopefully they won’t listen to all you people that bitch and ruin what is good, and add stupid shit real gamers don’t care about like precious memory for gay ass stories insted of gameplay ability…

You guys do realize that this is bullshit right? Frostbite “3” is Frostbite 2 with new features. It is not a new engine being built from the ground up, Thats a trope to make you want to buy it more. Each engine has its own look to it, If you look at BF3, then BF4, they look the same graphical wise.

The whole “3” thing is a bunch of bullshit that DICE was payed by EA to tell you.

      May 24th, 2013 at 11:58 am

It’s quite sad when information is abundant and easily accessible, and yet you still think this is some kind of conspiracy. Because that’s essentially what you are doing: creating a conspiracy about Frostbite 3. “It’s not real. EA and DICE are lying.” Dumbest thing I’ve read all day.

They called it 3 instead of 2 because the changes are both numerous and drastic. For one, the engine itself has been redesigned to be easily configurable to all systems at once, instead of each individual system. It has been streamlined for easy editing.

This is the same company that took a group of programmers and set them aside to create Frostbite 2 from the ground up, while the rest of DICE continued producing games. They essentially innovated and pioneered techniques that no other company really does. Look at what Infinity Ward took the time to announce for Ghosts–self-created shadows, something Frostbite 2 was doing several years ago. DICE thoroughly innovated lighting in games.

So to turn around and make such a ridiculous statement about a company with such a track record of innovation is insulting. It’s insulting to me, and I’m just a fan, but it’s a big insult to DICE as well. I’m also a fan that checks my facts and sources, something you apparently haven’t done.

Seriously, just do us a favor and remove yourself from the internet.

And in case you (or anyone else) was wondering, here are my sources.
