Battlefield 4 supports 66 players, as Commanders don’t count

19
Commanders in BF4 don't count towards the total player count, meaning that the game supports 66 players.

An interesting bit of news was revealed today during the Battlefield 4 live gameplay demonstration at E3. DICE revealed that Battlefield 4 actually supports 66 players, as the two commanders on each team do not count towards the overall player count. So each team has 32 players on the battlefield, plus one commander.

Another detail was revealed about the Battlefield 4 commander feature: the commander cannot play on the battlefield alongside the other players. Unlike in BF2, where Commanders were regular soldiers on the map, this time, they’re confined to their map screen and various tools and weapons.

One of the big criticisms of the commander in BF2 and BF2142 were that players who played as commanders would run around the map and didn’t really focus on commanding. Looks like that will be fixed with Battlefield 4, where the player leading the team will only see his command screen, as seen here:

The more control points his team has, the more weapons and gadgets the Commander has at his disposal. Some of the weapons include artillery, Tomahawk missile strike, UAV drone, and more.

HAHA ! i know but hopefully there will be private servers ( no rental garbage ) & all public servers owned by DICE & EA so no server abuse will happen .

They will probably requiere you to be on an account to be able to play as commander alone. I don’t think people will buy 2 copies simply to be a comander and infantry at the same time.

Absolutely agree with this post I think commanders are going to spoil the game, noob server admins already kick for no reason hope this doesn’t get out of hand.

is dosent make sense that there using 5 man squads for 32 man teams 32/5=6.4 so it looks like there will be a odd am out

They had 6 people squads in BF2. The thing is, not everyone is playing in squads(as weird as that sounds)

I don’t get why they didn’t push the player count… even just 8 more players to add up to 72 whould have been nice, it’s not much, but at least we see DICE is going in the right direction… them saying that it’s really 66 because of 2 more commanders who aren’t even in the game is just dicking arround, if they want to advertise with higher player counts, then just change that instead of talking arround it. You just need to change some numbers ;)

…so does that mean, because it doesn’t directly say that this is talking about ps4, that there will also be 66 players on the ps3 or not?

I can’t believe this is actually a question. Anyways, 66 players on PS3! You SERIOUS, when other Battlefield console games are only 24 PLAYERS. What make you think now, they will change it. 66 for PC, PS4, X1. Already been confirmed that its 24 for X360 and PS3.

PS3 and the Xbox 360 will have the original amount of players as it did with Battlefield 3. 24 player count.

So 32+32=66? Am I the only one disturbed by the maths here? You state that the commanders don’t count, yet the game supports 66 players?

Shouldn’t it say that it supports 64 players, and not 66, as the two commanders don’t count?

Something that worries me a bit that they’re still going for 7-base CQ maps. Didn’t Armored Kill (and certain other maps like Sharqi) already proof that 7 bases is often too much for just 64 players. It roughly boils down to 9 players per node. Which in itself is fine, but there are ALWAYS bushwookies camping the middle of nowhere, people piloting jets, people on respawn screen, etc. It results often in rather boring gameplay, I would rather have them stick to 5 bases for CQ Large and focus more on proper map design.

Theres only been one map, and no jets were featured, as well as a lack of the usual BF3 sniper it seemed.

      You can’t have enough flags.

Not every flag attack has to be a big firefight, being able to sneak around as a 2-man spec ops team was awesome in BF2.

What will happen with commanders in maps similar to metro? Their birds eye weapons are useless: tomahawk missles, gunship, vehicle drop. I guess we won’t be seeing any more metro style maps :(

      Good riddance, Metro was terrible.

speak for yourself dude, it is still one of the most played maps in BF3, which probably indicates that you are not a reference.
